Tohato Caramel Corn
One of my favorite new snacks. It's the perfect blend of salty sweet crunchy, the consistancy is sort of like a caramel corn flavor cheeto. So delish. And the packaging is hilariously cute. The best flavor is the almond caramel corn but it seems that they have a million more flavors in Japan. What does the one that looks like Santa Claus taste like?[Tohato Website]
One Brick
I have recently started volunteering through One Brick, an organization that allows people to participate in individual events by signing up through an online calendar. All the events for the next month are posted online and you can pick which ones work with your schedule and RSVP via email. All training for the event is provided when you show up.So far, I have helped sort medical supplies for Doc to Dock, an amazing organization that takes excess medical supplies from local hospitals that would end up in a land fill and reorganizes them and ships them to hospitals in Africa who desperately need them.
"Every 30 seconds a child in Africa dies of malaria. Our organization is able to collect, sort and donate medical supplies that are necessary to save lives. In the United States, patients are never turned away from hospitals for a lack of medical supplies whereas in developing nations more often than not, they are only able to treat patients in emergency situations due to a lack of supplies. Your participation with our organization will help us to sort these very supplies which are so desperately needed in developing countries."

Year of the Dog
I'm not sure why this movie was overlooked when it came out but it really is fantastic. I rented it on a whim and was so glad I did. Directed by Mike White and starring Molly Shannon, John C. Reilly, and Peter Sarsgaard. "Peggy is single, childless, in her 40s, a lonely executive assistant in a friendly office. Her dog Pencil is the love of her life, and when he dies after eating some sort of toxin, Peggy's life spins out of her control: a friendly neighbor (John C. Reilly) invites her for dinner; a friendly staff member at her vet's (Peter Sarsgaard) calls with an abused dog he recommends she adopt - she does, and also finds herself attracted to this fellow. She becomes a vegan, supports animal-rights causes, and embroils her brother's young children in these concerns. Saving dogs and other animals become such a passion that her mental health and her job may be in danger. Are regaining control and finding love beyond her reach?" [IMBD]

Mexican Summer
After realizing that 99 percent off my vinyl collection is stolen from my parents (good stuff, but...) I decided to inject some novelty in to the mix. So I am trying a new vinyl subscription service called "Mexican Summer""Mexican Summer is a limited edition vinyl and digital only label that officially launches in September 2008. Our records will all be pressed in very limited quantities and will also be available for download via our website. The vinyl will also be available on a subscription basis and at a select group of exclusive indie retailers across the country. 2-3 albums will be released every other month in various formats - 12", 7", Picture Disc, etc and all records will be beautifully packaged, numbered, pressed on high quality virgin vinyl and include a download card."
The first three records I received are all excellent. Marissa Nadler is slow and sad folksy, Black Moth Super Rainbow is fun electro low-fi, and Golden Triangle is garage punk with girl vocals. All stuff I'm glad I found out about. Next shipment should be arriving in March.

The Great Sourdough Experiment
I decided that on my list of things to do in the new year, I would attempt to make some bread from scratch. Weekends spent watching my Dad make bread while I was growing up are some of my fondest memories. Sometimes I would "help" by punching down the big ball of puffy risen dough or by taste-testing a new loaf hot out of the oven. Out of nostalgia for those times and for the many years I spent working in a bakery famous for it's sourdough, I decided, I too, would make sourdough!The recipes for the "starter" (or "mother") and for the finished loaf are from a great little book we picked up called Beyond Nose to Tail Eating by Fergus Henderson and Justin Piers Gellatly. The basic idea is to combine rhubarb, flour, yogurt and water and leave in a warm place to make an environment for wild yeast (which lives in the flour and the air) to grow. It needs to be fed a little more of the base ingredients every day for about a week until it is bubbly and sour and then you can combine it with more flour and water to make bread.

Persepolis
I just read the graphic novel Persepolis and then rushed out to see the movie version while it is still in theaters. One of the rare cases of the movie and the book being equally fantastic. Read this book and see this movie.Manufactured Landscapes
